A recent analysis published in the NC Medical Journal that found major disparities in health status and access to health care between uninsured North Carolinians living in the coverage gap and insured populations.

Researchers from the Department of Health Policy and Management at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill concluded that the coverage gap population ‘constitutes a missed opportunity for preventing future illness and disability in North Carolina.’
The majority of those living in the coverage gap are employed.
This new analysis found that compared to those insured North Carolinians living above the federal poverty guidelines, as well as those on Medicaid, uninsured individuals living in poverty are 3 times less likely to receive regular medical care. They are also twice as likely to delay needed care.
