N.C. Rep. Chuck McGrady made an important point when he spoke at a May 31 prayer breakfast where residents gathered to discuss health care for the poor.
“Most change that comes to the government comes from a groundswell up,” McGrady noted in discussing solutions to the state’s health care coverage gap.
About 1.08 million North Carolinians don’t have health care coverage. Many are among the working poor who don’t qualify for Medicaid but don’t earn enough to afford private insurance.
The Affordable Care Act was designed in part to expand coverage to these folks.
Medicaid eligibility was extended to nearly all low-income individuals with incomes at or below 138 percent of the poverty line.
